Welcome to Our Next Adventure

Writer: Shari Shari

If you've been following my journey since my first life altering event back in 2021, you might remember a Facebook or Instagram post with a similar photo to this one. Only the rug is at a different door.

It's been just over a month now since our fire and losing Nala. In that time frame life has been a rollercoaster of emotions and full of overwhelm and feelings of displacement, disappointment and what ifs. Right when I thought life was good and my mental state was good..... CRASH!

I really don't think people understand just HOW much being out of a routine or in different surroundings can deeply affect one's mental state. Not having a simple thing like a pen even upset me. You don't realize all of the small, insignificant things that you use daily until you have to replace them all! I actually just went and bought scissors, tape and a stapler. Who knew I needed those things?! I've been to Target and on Amazon more in the last 2 weeks than I think I have in the last year!!

Finding this temporary housing was a bit frustrating. It was suh a back and forth process with the housing company and the insurance company and then with apartment complexes. UGH! I'm pretty grateful though that I found a landlord that really had compassion for my situation and wanted to help me and my boys out. We had to downsize from a 3 bedroom, 2 bath to a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, but, we're compromising because it's temporary. The boys are bunking thanks to a friends ex-husband who happened to have a bunk bed that wasn't being used, while I'm across the living room from them.

I think though, that the boys 2 favorite things are the yard that they can go out and throw the baseball or football in and I'm still able to see them. And, I may have surprised them and put the extra tv in their room since I never watch in my room. They about flipped!! I almost got knocked over with the hug I was given.

We've bought some new things to replace some of our damaged things and the boys have helped me with that they can. Dawson has been my shopping helper and Jace has been my organizer. I wish someone would be my builder..... oh well, we'll get there eventually. Until then, the boxes will sit in the places the finished pieces are supposed to be. HAHA

Here's some things I'm hating;

  • having to start over again. Having to buy things that I literally just bought brand new two years ago. Having half of my things in a storage unit being cleaned but having to pay to get them out if I want them sooner than they are finished with them.

  • we won't have a full Christmas tree this year nor all of our decorations, but we're going to make do with a mini tree and the decor that we had stored at my parents house.

  • the extra loudness of: my temporary upstairs neighbors, my washer and dryer and my dishwasher!

It's not all bad, there is some good coming from this whole thing I suppose. Here's a few:

  • I decided that I didn't actually like my bedroom furniture, so since it needed to be replaced, I picked out some pieces I love!

  • I got to buy more books since mine were all smoke damaged and are still being cleaned!! haha

  • I'll eventually get to go home to a completely renovated condo!

I'm trying to keep those positives in my mind as much as I can over these next long months to make it through. In the meantime, the boys and I are headed to Disneyworld with Grama, Aunt and cousins this weekend for some MUCH needed fun!
